If your home has no mains gas and is heated by oil or LPG, you can get £9,000 off an air source or ground source heat pump until 31 March 2027. After that the extra £1,500 is due to end.
How the grant works
Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants
- Air source (air-to-water) heat pump: £7,500
- Ground or water source heat pump: £7,500
- Extra for oil or LPG homes with no mains gas: £1,500, until March 2027
- Biomass boiler (rural, off-gas homes): £5,000
- Air-to-air heat pump: £2,500
You don’t apply yourself. Your MCS-certified installer applies for you and takes the grant off your quote. The heat pump must be commissioned within 120 days of the application.
Who can get it
- You own the home in England or Wales, including landlords and second homes.
- You’re replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating.
- Most new builds, social housing and homes that have already had heat pump funding aren’t eligible.
Paying the rest
You can combine the grant with a Warm Homes loan of up to £20,000 for an air-to-water heat pump, spreading the remaining cost over several years.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme budget is £400m for 2027-28. Because the overall budget is limited, it’s worth getting quotes early rather than close to the deadline.
