Last reviewed 3 November 2026 · Independent guide, not affiliated with the UK Government

At a glance

  • A loan, not a grant: you repay it
  • Interest up to 5 percentage points below standard loans, and some lenders offer 0%
  • Up to 30 years to repay with some lenders
  • Open across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • Can be combined with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme or Home Energy Scotland grants

Who can apply

  • You must own the home, with or without a mortgage.
  • It must be a residential property in the UK.
  • Private landlords can borrow in their own name. Companies and SPVs can’t in this first phase.
  • Renters can’t apply, but their landlord can.

There’s no income test. Lenders run their own credit and affordability checks, as with any loan.

How to apply

  1. Decide which upgrades suit your home. GOV.UK has a free recommendations tool.
  2. Check whether you can get a grant first, such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
  3. Get quotes from MCS-certified installers.
  4. Compare participating lenders on the total amount repayable.
  5. Apply to the lender or through your installer. Keep your quote, agreement, invoice and MCS certificate.
